So sad to hear of the passing of Jack and Buford. May they both rest in peace.

For many of us growing up in Mt Baker and Rainier Valley, playing sports was a favorite pastime.  Jerry and I played Pony League baseball in the 7th and 8th grades, while attending Asa Mercer.  I wish I could remember all our teammates....but one I'll never forget was Buford Neal.  He was a fearsome power hitter and physically far superior to anyone else on the team.  Opposing pitchers were often intimidated by Buford's imposing presence at the plate.  Never an easy out, facing Buford was like going up against a junior Hank Aaron.  One memory actually happened on Franklin's hard dirt ball field, which was our main practice field.  Although I wasn't a pitcher, I was pitching batting practice and Buford was the hitter.  I was probably about 5' 2" and weighed 110 lbs.  I try and throw Buford a roundhouse curveball and he smacks it rapid fire like a speeding bullet back to the mound.  The ball hits my right ankle square on the bone.  I didn't have a second to jump and avoid getting hit.  I fell to the ground in pain, thinking my ankle had been shattered.  Buford was the first player to get to me...to see if I was o.k.  He cared so much and was so concerned that I might be hurt.  What a great teammate!  Fortunately the ankle wasn't broken, just bruised and sore.

I wish I could remember more of the players on those teams.  I recall playing with Henry Bowyer (class of 69), Jerry Israel, my brother Jerry, Ron Gibson (class of 69), maybe Ron Henderson and Dempsey Hendley.  Please let us know if you recall any of the players who played Pony League ball back in '63 and '64.

It's easier to remember our Little League teams because they were made up of players from a much closer proximity...so you were likely to see them at school.  For Pony and Babe Ruth teams, players were drawn from a larger area that encompassed several neighborhoods - Mt Baker, Rainier Valley, Seward Park, even Beacon Hill.

Speaking of Little League, I vividly recall tough games against Lakewood, a team that included the likes of Tom Rhodes, Al Ovadia, Wayne Henry, Dave Azose hanging out on first base, etc.  We had Larry & Gary Bingham, Armenious Patterson (class of 69), Steve Strehlo (class of 67), Jerry Israel, Mark Pennington (who later pitched for the Huskies), great friend Roland Caliboso, etc.  I don't remember ever beating Lakewood...but I did get a hard line-drive rbi single to left center off Rhodes in our final game!  Sports really does bring people together...from all walks of life.  And those lessons we learned all those years ago about teamwork, working together, being part of team, playing to win, playing by the rules, practice, setting goals, believing you can win....certainly helped us become who we are today.  R.I.P. Buford.  Your memory will always be with us!

Al Ovadia

I'm  going to dig into my memory bin to see if I can find some information regarding early baseball days. I know that you and your brother played a year ahead of me  because of your birthday. Buford, Mark Pennington, Ron Gibson and others were on the All-Star team with me in 1965.  I have a picture of our Seattle Police officers guild team aka Lakewood from Little League and I'll give you some names that should jog your memory when I find the picture. Remember Mike Heidi and Ron Christianson from Raineer Beach? Other than my marriage and birth of my children,  most of my fondest memories come from baseball.

I saw "Jackie" a few years ago after a doctor appointment. I didn't recognize him as he looked disheveled and was wearing shorts on a cold day. I later heard from Jerry Grashin that Jack was very sick and he had gone to visit him at the Kline Galland Home. Someone else reported he attended his daughter's wedding a few months ago in a wheelchair and attached to oxygin. I remember him as a gentle soul who was sometimes a tag along but with a kind heart and big smile.RIP Jackie.

So sorry to hear about Jack's passing and struggles in recent years.  Back in the day, Jack was a "friend of those who wanted no friends,"  always smiling, joking and looking on the bright side.  I remember the fun a bunch of us had playing pick-up basketball on occasion in the drive-way of one of his neighbors after school.  Jack new how to use his size to block out for optimum rebounding position and set a mean pick to free up a teammate for an open shot or drive to the basket!  That softball team Jack had must have been a lot of fun.  I remember being back in Seattle for a visit when I was 21...and Jack and Jerry invited me to join the team for one game.  I was in right field when a deep fly ball was hit over my head....I chased the ball down and threw it as far as I could toward third base ahead of the runner.  Jack caught my throw on the fly and made the tag for the out to complete the play.  Jack's reaction to the play was total enthusiasm!  Jack always made you feel welcome!     R.I.P. Jack

Note to Al O. - Yes I remember playing against Mike Heidi and Ron Christianson and how very good they were.  Later, did they play ball for Rainier Beach?

So sad, there has been lots of remembrances’ in the world lately and in our FHS family there’s wonderful and poignant memories. My condolences to Sharon Lee Wong, Buford Neal and Jack Halfon families. I last spoke with Jack in the 80’s Genesee Ave Safeway parking lot. So long ago all their lasting instant smiles and laughter I recall, RIP. Thanks all for sharing.

I know it's soooo a coupla weeks ago, but I was outta the area when "I heard the news today oh boy" about Jack Halfon. I have so many memories of Jack, I just had to sit back and let the viddies play 'twixt my ears. I recalled one fond memory when after a basketball or football game, about 20 of us went to Farrell's ice cream parlor and ordered a "City Zoo". The Zoo was a huuuuuge, many-flavored tub of hyperglycemia. On our way out, Jack ordered a pastrami sandwich to go !!! I never called Jack "Food Giant" or "half-track" as others did; I was also called many unkind names, and childishly responded in kind. All who knew Jack knew he was of the kind-hearted, always-a-smile, amiable ilk.  I cropped this pic from our 6th grade class at Whitworth, June '62. RIP Jack.

On an unrelated matter, does anybody have contact info for Jerry Israel? At the last reunion, he told me he was living/working in Lost Wages, Nevada. Anybody in contact with Jerry ??? Thanx, peace.

Hey John.  Check with Dave Azose.  He is the source of the information that I have on Jerry Israel.   I am guessing that Dave is likely to have current info, or know who has it.

Thanx Nancy. Somethings never change: Dave is still the president, after all these years......

Thanks Nancy for referring John to me.  John please feel free to give me a call 206-683-4300. I'm pretty sure Jerry Israel is still in Las Vegas and while I haven't stayed in touch with him I'm pretty sure Albert Angel has and we should be able to track him down for you.

I want to thank all of you for posting such nice comments about fellow classmate Jack Halfon.  I have continued to stay in close touch with Jack over they years. After his death I directed Jack's three daughters to read the nice comments from all of you shared about Jack and it gave them a great deal of comfort. Fellow classmates Dale Cohen, Albert Angel and Steve Condiotty have all stayed in close contact with Jack over the years.  I can tell you that the Jack you remember with the big smile, great friendly personality, and fun person to be around was the same Jack up until his final days.

I am struck by all of the recent losses of beloved classmates. And by the fond remembrances of baseball. As a total non-athlete (and maybe also as a female) sports didn't play muchof a role in my life. But I still loved reading the comments!

The recollections made me think it would be a good idea to post this link for anyone who is interested. You may remember Roberto Maestas, our fiery Spanish teacher. He died several years ago, but he became a renowned community activist after he left Franklin, founding El Centro de la Raza. A plaza in his name is being built with an opportunity to purchase bricks. Deadline is Jan 31, so if you are interested, just go to this link.http://plazarobertomaestas.org/buy-a-brick/

And save the date - May 19 Franklin Alumni Association and Foundation will host the Annual Hall of Fame Celebration. I would love to see the Class of 68 heavily represented. Sort of a mini-reunion. Let me know if you want more information.

Thanx Dave, I will contact you, but there's nothing urgent or pressing. Long-to-short, I recently spent a week in Lost Wages (never been there before). It hit me at 36,000 feet somewhere over Oregon that Jerry told me at the last reunion he lived/worked there and really liked it. I looked him up while I was there, and tried to call a few times, but no answer, no vmail. So, I'm there, 1st time, and I hear Buford Neal and Jack have passed away. And David Bowie. And Celine Dion's husband. Huuuge tribute to Rene at Caesar's Palace. It was a lot to assimilate inside a week. I hope to go back and NOT hear of anybody passing away.

Hope all's well with all Quaker 68-ers. Njoy !!!

Hello all.  I just had an email from Denise (Lambert) Leonard saying that she has lost her annual and all the senior pictures etc.  Is anyone willing to meet up with her and allow her to take copies from your annual so that she still has some photos?  If so, please message her, or contact me if you have a problem.  Thanks.

Fellow Quaker 68-ers, it is with a heavy heart I bring the news that we've lost another classmate. Carl Kushner died July 27, 2015. He was 64, would've turned 65 in October. I have no other details as I've searched extensively for an obit, alas, to no avail. I cropped this pic from our 6th grade class @ Whitworth, June '62. RIP Carl

RIP Carl. He was a good looking guy. What I remember about Carl was his association with Janine Guttman. Janine would volunteer that they would go out furniture shopping (the bedroom). The union didn't evolve into anything more serious.

MarleneJS: Carl would of like that your observation! Got me thinking was that when Carl RIP was trying to bake bread with too much yeast darn, then it was on to simpler tasks in Home Ec class? Don't answer, just kidding!
