John - Thanks a bunch for the update!  It would be fun to touch base with these people.  Cheryl Ruggles was a lot of fun at school.  It would be nice to see her again.  Sorry about her sisters.  I didn't really know them.  I mostly hung around Cheryl at school. I just remember laughing a lot with her. :)

The last time I saw Cheryl Ruggles was the early 70's. We were both still living in the old 'hood, and she walked into the Elbow Room in Columbia City. We enjoyed a short confab, a coupla stiff drinks, and that's all I remember. A few people organizing the last re-union tried to locate many unknowns, Cheryl among them, but all leads were dead ends. You might try contacting Sandy Smith (Hansen). Sandy's brother Danny was friends with Cheryl's brother Ricky. Ricky may provide some insight as to Cheryl's whereabouts, or maybe he doesn't know where she is either. Worth a try, I reckon,,,,,,

John - thanks so much for having Sandi contact me.  Cheryl probably won't even remember me.  It was so long ago.  Thanks again - I was surprised you contacted Sandi - so nice of you!

Peggy J: Yer welcome, glad I could help. Sandy and I swap emails every now & again and we're both on facebook if ya wanna look us up. My Mom and Sandy's Mom were friends for many years (my Mom died in March 2011). I'm amazed at how many people I've found on FB. A coupla years ago I found a guy that I worked with in the early 70's, at a company long gone outta bizness. Hadn't heard from him in over 40 years, so we had lunch & it was great !!! Anywho, njoy, ciao for now.

I just had an email from Ted Williams saying that Buford Neal passed away.  Does anyone have any info, web obituary, or something to put with his name on the In Memory section?

What a painful and heartbreaking loss. He was such a fun loving gentle soul. He was my friend and will be deeply missed. May his soul rest in peace.

This is such sad news. Not only did we play sports together in high school but we started our friendship in 1963, playing Pony League Baseball together for the Sportsland Bucs. We also played All-Stars and had the opportunity to go to Portland in 1965 to play for the west coast championships.

In Portland, we all stayed in Portland area homes. Each player to a home. The first night the doorbell rings and it's our coach with Buford. The people he was scheduled to stay with backed out when they discovered he was Black. Of course, they didn't tell us that, but we all knew. Buford certainly knew, it was certainly not his first experience with prejudice, but he handled it with incredible dignity, at age 14.

Now over 50 years later, I can still feel the anger I felt that day, It made me cry then, and hearing of his passing, it is making me cry again.

Buford was an incredible athelete, yes, but on that day he taught me about life, and for that I am eternally grateful.

May he rest in peace.

Wow Albert what a tender bitter sweet memory to share. I only have a warm feeling surrounding the mention of his name. So sad to lose one of our dear friends from our childhoods. RIP Buford.

So sad to hear about Buford's passing - a quiet leader who displayed nothing but class - also an exceptional athlete who excelled at multiple sports - Mark & I also played with him on the Bucs although I think it might have been the year before Al O did - also sorry to hear about Buford's Portland experience - that wouldn't have happened in the old neighborhood - R.I.P. Buford - Jerry

Jack's passing is indeed very sad. I have so many wonderful memories of Jack starting at a very early age as he lived in the Seward Park area two doors down from Jay Franco, who was a close childhood friend. Jack took a lot of ribbing as a child, but always kept a smile on his face. He had a heart of gold and was always there to help a friend. I have not seen Jack in probably 40 years or so and understand he had gone through a very rough patch for some years. For that I am very sorry, as he deserved better. He was a sweet soul who brought several of us in his circle, many cherished memories. My condolences to his family. We have lost a special man today.

I am so sorry to hear about Buford and "Jackie". Both I remember well. What I remember most about Jack was the smile that never left his face. So sad.

So sorry to hear about these passings.  I wasn't close to any of those we;ve lost recently, but I remember them, young and smiling.  RIP.  And for those of us still here, hold your loved ones tight.

Joining all of you in remembering Jack and expressing sadness for the loss of our classmate. Al's comments mirror many of my memories. He was a neighbor, a classmate beginning in Whitworth, and a friend throughout my school years in Seattle. I hadn't seen him in many years but my guess is that great great personality of his endured throughout his life. May he rest in peace. Phil

Buford and Jack will always be remebered. Buford taught me the value of having humor in the world and was quick with a joke and a beautiful smile that would always brighten my day. Jack brought a soft safe sweetness to the world that will be missed. May their souls rest in peace.

Buford was one of those people you could share a joke with just by raising one eyebrow.  He got it and that kept me out of trouble several times!

Jack taught me about humility and kindness. Part of the ribbing he took back in the day was the nickname "Food Giant".  It always made me cringe a little. I imagined getting stuck with a name like that. I'd come close a couple of times thanks to a cereal commercial.

I remember an assembly though. There was Jack with a watch cap on pretending to row a boat.  On his back was a sign that said, "Food Giant".  I'll admit that I couldn't have done that.  He earned a new level of appreciation. After the assemby I didn't hear that nickname as much. I also understood that Jack was the last person I knew who would ever engage in anything unkind. Being a little more like Jack was a good thing!

May Buford and Jack's journeys be gentle! They are remembered fondly!!!

For many of us growing up in Mt Baker and Rainier Valley, playing sports was a favorite pastime.  Jerry and I played Pony League baseball in the 7th and 8th grades, while attending Asa Mercer.  I wish I could remember all our teammates....but one I'll never forget was Buford Neal.  He was a fearsome power hitter and physically far superior to anyone else on the team.  Opposing pitchers were often intimidated by Buford's imposing presence at the plate.  Never an easy out, facing Buford was like going up against a junior Hank Aaron.  One memory actually happened on Franklin's hard dirt ball field, which was our main practice field.  Although I wasn't a pitcher, I was pitching batting practice and Buford was the hitter.  I was probably about 5' 2" and weighed 110 lbs.  I try and throw Buford a roundhouse curveball and he smacks it rapid fire like a speeding bullet back to the mound.  The ball hits my right ankle square on the bone.  I didn't have a second to jump and avoid getting hit.  I fell to the ground in pain, thinking my ankle had been shattered.  Buford was the first player to get to me...to see if I was o.k.  He cared so much and was so concerned that I might be hurt.  What a great teammate!  Fortunately the ankle wasn't broken, just bruised and sore.

I wish I could remember more of the players on those teams.  I recall playing with Henry Bowyer (class of 69), Jerry Israel, my brother Jerry, Ron Gibson (class of 69), maybe Ron Henderson and Dempsey Hendley.  Please let us know if you recall any of the players who played Pony League ball back in '63 and '64.

It's easier to remember our Little League teams because they were made up of players from a much closer proximity...so you were likely to see them at school.  For Pony and Babe Ruth teams, players were drawn from a larger area that encompassed several neighborhoods - Mt Baker, Rainier Valley, Seward Park, even Beacon Hill.

Speaking of Little League, I vividly recall tough games against Lakewood, a team that included the likes of Tom Rhodes, Al Ovadia, Wayne Henry, Dave Azose hanging out on first base, etc.  We had Larry & Gary Bingham, Armenious Patterson (class of 69), Steve Strehlo (class of 67), Jerry Israel, Mark Pennington (who later pitched for the Huskies), great friend Roland Caliboso, etc.  I don't remember ever beating Lakewood...but I did get a hard line-drive rbi single to left center off Rhodes in our final game!  Sports really does bring people together...from all walks of life.  And those lessons we learned all those years ago about teamwork, working together, being part of team, playing to win, playing by the rules, practice, setting goals, believing you can win....certainly helped us become who we are today.  R.I.P. Buford.  Your memory will always be with us!

I'm  going to dig into my memory bin to see if I can find some information regarding early baseball days. I know that you and your brother played a year ahead of me  because of your birthday. Buford, Mark Pennington, Ron Gibson and others were on the All-Star team with me in 1965.  I have a picture of our Seattle Police officers guild team aka Lakewood from Little League and I'll give you some names that should jog your memory when I find the picture. Remember Mike Heidi and Ron Christianson from Raineer Beach? Other than my marriage and birth of my children,  most of my fondest memories come from baseball.
