Hi Gang,

For all you Sharples folks who have younger siblings, the other day I met a former Sharples science teacher who is still around.  Your sibs might remember Miss Benson.  I can't remember what her married name now is but if you'd like to get in contact, she volunteers on occasion at the Assistance League of Seattle Thrift Shop, 1415 N 45th St in Seattle, (206) 547-4680.  I'm sure she would appreciate hearing from some of her former students.

Speaking of Sharples, a few years back I happened to meet a man whose last name is Sharples. Since that's not a common last name I enquired, and yes, he is a grandson of Dr. Caspar W. Sharples, from whom the school gets its name! I asked him how his family felt about the school board's action to rename the school after a community activist. He said that the family was very hurt, and it was an unexpected rough slap in the face.

What most don't know is that the school was named after a Seattle doctor who was consistently giving his free time and resources to help those in the inner city community and could not afford doctor bills.

How do I know this? My dad's family was one of those in the Japanese community, and he always told my sister and I about the wonderful selfless doctor, and reminded us that we were mispronouncing the good doctor's name. For those who haven't heard, we always mispronounced it as 'Sharp-less,' but it was apparently an English name from Lancashire or Scotland, pronounced 'Shar-pulls,' as if it were the plural of Sharple.

Get a more in-depth view of The Canal in photos.

Saturday night’s informal social at The Canal will be our last summer day to gather. The venue is a nookery of sorts if you will with four levels providing ten at a table. See pictures 11 -13 and 18-20 and 26. Main floor entrance viewed from inside pictures 21-25.

Outside Lanai, offers up for quiet conversations, the fresh summer atmosphere, and the tinge of the seashore nearby. See pictures 1 through 5.

The Remembrance, Reflection, and Memorial on the 4th level. See pictures 14 through 17. We honor the class of 1968, and our departed - has been 50 years. Going to borrow the saying, “The whole world is watching,” a pivotal year indeed. Champagne toasts are in order.

Sorry, but I will be fly fishing in Alaska. Somebody have a single malt scotch "neat" for me.

Thanks,

Don Lorenz

Where are you fishing out of? We are in Ketchikan.

Don’t fall in Don. That water is mighty cold in the far North. As I haven’t had a drink of alcohol in 17 years, I’ll have a water with ice and a twist and raise it in your honor.  I admire your choice of drink and the only way to drink it; neat. Enjoy Alaska!

I did not notice before that it was fly fishing.  Fly fishing is probably not as risky as seining, Gill-netting or trolling since one is not out on the high seas.

"Here lies your great-grandparents, grandparents, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, your neighbors and comrades. We honor them for their service and sacrifice."

The 1932 American Doughboy sculpture was outdoors at the Seattle Center's Veterans Hall and relocated to Evergreen Washelli.

From washelli.com /the-doughboy/ - It is interesting to note that the statue’s original site (what is now Seattle Center) was once the original land claim of Seattle pioneer David Denny, who lived with his family in a cabin near that very location as early as 1857. As coincidence would have it, David and Louisa Denny also owned the land where the “Doughboy” stands now. They indeed founded Oak Lake Cemetery, which was later renamed Washelli.

As posted on Facebook Reunion Class page "Franklin High School Quakers Class of 68 50th Reunion Seattle"

CLASSMATES Where Are You?

We all remember the early '60's sitcom "Car 54 Where Are You" - so it is our crowdsourcing call for our missing.

If you know any information feel free to contact us and let them know we are here too. Our Tolo databank files are missing their current vitals.

It is with Great Appreciation and a Big Thank You! OUR LIST of Whereabouts needs your empowering helping hand of engagement.

Sadly I report the passing of Cheryl Carrabba. We were in Miss Hofer's US history class when we 1st heard that JFK had been shot in Dallas. I cropped this pic from the Sharples Sharks 1965 yearbook. Cheryl, RIP

John Hein

I'm saddened beyond words, but I just stumbled onto something on FB that was posted by Andrea Dills, who is apparently Micheline (Hoag) Middleton's daughter:

My mom Micheline Middleton passed away Thursday evening after being in the hospital about a week and half. She will be loved and missed more than words can express. I don't know all of her friends to reach out to and I'm sorry to do it this way. I have tried to contact the ones we knew, but it has been such a crazy time for my brother and I and the family. We will do a memorial but it will be later possibly a few months. If you are interested let me know and I will contact you when a date has been made.

The post is from May 19, so the Thursday would've been May 17. Does anybody have any way of finding out about this? I'll do what I can, stay tuned......

Micheline's story began in Seattle, WA in 1950. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1968. She studied at Skagit Valley College after moving to the valley and bringing a beautiful daughter into the world in in 1974. She married Jerry in June of '77 and gained a son, known to most as Pudge. The family traveled around a lot but finally came home and settled outside of Sedro-Woolley in 1985. She was proceeded in death by her parents Armanda and Jay Hoag, her daughters Dawn Lynn and Heather, and her husband Jerry Ross. She passed on May 17, 2018 surrounded by her loved ones. She is survived by her eldest sister Jaqueline Gray and her husband Jim Gray (who acted as a father figure to her) her sister Liliane Wimmer, her son Jerry E. Middleton, daughter Andrea Dills, six grandchildren and one great-grand daughter as well as nieces, nephews, brothers and sister-in-laws. She leaves behind many friends and family members that loved and cared for her in her short stay on earth. She will be sorely missed but our hope is in Jesus that we will reunite again. A celebration of life will be available at a later date.

Thanks John for letting us know.  I sent a note to Micheline's daughter and asked that we be notified when they have her service.  RIP Micheline.
