At Stanford I got a D in Italian and other poor grades and therefore lost my scholarship. Smoking pot, politics (I was tear-gassed, clubbed, managed the food for around 80 kids during a 9 day sit-in, etc etc etc) music in San Francisco (Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, It's a Beautiful Day, Janis Joplin) looking for true love, and not going to classes cut into my academic performance.

Went to New York City to break into acting and it became clear in my acting classes that I had some talent. Unfortunately I was scared to death of auditioning and you can't get parts without auditioning!

Went to 2 different branches of The City University of New York to get an undergraduate degree in Psychology which I finally completed at UW. I had decided that if I stayed an actress I'd still be waitressing at the horrifically old age of 40 hoping for a break, or at least hoping for a better tranquilizer.
Post the BS degree I went right into the UW School Of Social Work and got my MSW in 1978.

Again with the stage fright of job interviews/auditions and a big dose of low self esteem I figured I had a better chance at a job in the rustic backwater of Olympia. So I got a professional job, met my husband, got pregnant (leaky diaphragm) and I lived in that little burg for 36 years. My daughter tells me she knows lots of diaphragm babies her age.

I'd grown to be very comfortable there but still missed Seattle and went up as much as I could. I have become a practicing Jew, both my bio kids became Bnai Mitzvot. Judaism and our Schul are an important part of my life.
I divorced my husband in '09 and changed my name to Yaela (my Hebrew name) Ettlinger (maiden name of my Jewish Great Grandmother). I wanted a really Jewish name to counteract the anti-semitism of my Jewish German family, who hid their Judaism and attempted to hide mine. Unfortunately it turned out my husband was also anti-semitic AND a Holocaust denier in spite of being a Historian! Enough with the anti-semites already!!!

I am happily retired. Moved back to Seattle in 2016 and really enjoying being back home but, damn, this place has changed. Love all the artistic/musical/theatrical resources and of course the mountains and water. Everything in Olympia was in the wrong place. The Olympics were to the North and Rainier to the East - really ridiculous. Those southern Washingtonians can't get anything right!

School Story:

The politics of the time really shaped me. I was very proud to be in a diverse school where respected student leaders were people of color. The fights between our basketball team and one or more? of the mostly white schools in North Seattle made me glad I was on the right side. When in "our riot" someone accidentally broke the sink off the wall in the principle's office, I thought we might be going too far. But obviously, looking back on those years and what followed them, we didn't do enough.

Mr.Nagle's classes in African American History and his teaching us about the Supreme court and the truth about President Lincoln and his wily politics were the best times academically. I also really loved doing all the plays, particularly "The Madwoman of Chaillot".

Hi Gary, so glad you'll be coming. The committee for the reunion has made it cheaper and more comfortable than past ones - cosy quiet places to chat on both nights and casual clothes are ok for Saturday, a big relief to me as I feel very confined in formal clothes.

Franceda, we had such fun in "The Man Who Came to Dinner". You were so great with your mad professor character and the Roach House. Hard to think we will never see each other again. Love and respect always. Rest in peace and glory.
