Just curious.........

Did everyone living in southern California and Arizona survive the earthquake?? I know that we have several classmates living in areas affected by the quake. Esther Fisse and Barb Forman both have homes in the greater Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Catherderal City environs. Karen Kummerfeldt has a winter home there also. Nancy has a place in San Diego and one in Phoenix.

I read that Depak Chopra took partial/total blame for the earthquake. It seems that he was in the midst of a deep and intense earth meditation at the time of the quake. I don't know if by taking blame whether he has left himself open to any legal liabilities. If so, he better start assembling his dream team of lawyers.

Hello to all:

We were in San Diego for the earthquake on Sunday. It brought back memories of the northwest. We head back to Phoenix today and will be keeping a look out for the damage to I-8 that caused it to be closed on Sunday. Otherwise around here it was obvious that it was an earthquake but wasn't close enough to inflict much damage. It was more like an amusement part ride. Our son and other friends in Phoenix felt it also.

........................Dateline Indian Wells, CA.........

Earthquake report.....from one of our classmates who may or may not be too shy to have there name listed herein. I will let them make the choice. The quake lasted a good 20 seconds and if they hadn't been approaching the 60 year mark, they could have gone surfing in the swimming pool. The fans and light fixtures swung/swang/swinged back and forth. It was enough to get the adrenaline flowing and the heart a pumping. Fortunately there was no damage, just another exciting day in paradise.

I've corresponded with Debra Moore. Seems that the photos she has posted to her profile were taken at an Easter picnic. I guess it ended in a silly string fight. She didn't say whether she participated but I imagine the Grandkids were a mess. Remember those days?? I recall Chris Lough's mom asking me "What mud puddle/hole I was planning to play in that day?"

Gotta go......She who must be obeyed has just informed me that I can take her out for dinner. I have learned from past experience that I have to sleep sometime. Pub grub tonight at the Eagle Creek Saloon.

Weather report from Down Under ............

The southwest of Western Australia is nice and wet having received buckets of rain over the past 48 hours. The hills have a lovely green tinge and the irrigation season looks like it may be over! My boots squelched on the ground as I walked across the paddock to check the horses' water trough this morning. Hooray.

Susan.....Nice to hear from you. How are the horses?? Did any race this year? Or have they been at the trainer's, learning how do their share at paying the bills? Now that fall is arriving Downunder, I was wondering if you have the color change in the tree leaves? Are there any areas that have the vibrant colors as in the New England states?

Greetings Classmates.

Just requested an announcement of my next gig be posted. Thought it'd be nice to say something, but what pray tell. Random notes I guess:

John MacLeod, you seem to be the glue in this forum. Thank you. Good to know you've got work, which may reflect a rebounding economy?

Enjoy reading all y'all's missives herein.

Looks like the Mariners may be exciting this season with some great new players.

Never been much bothered by age, yet approaching 60 is daunting!

Carry on, Dorothy

Dorothy........Great to hear from you.  I've never been bothered by birthdays either. However  I was a bit disappointed at 21 and 25, when there was no great revelation or life altering clap of thunder.  60 was a bit different.  It took me a few days to come to terms with the number.  How in the heck did I manage to get here and survive?  Aches and pain wise it was as if all the wheels came off the wagon at once.  My knee, my shoulder and my wrist all went gunnybags one right after the other.  I guess it was a way to tell me to slow up a bit.

Debbie Moore......Is looking for annuals or pictures from Sharples and Van Assalt that anyone might have and are willing to share.  I have mine from Sharples and Graham Hill in a box somewhere.  Just a minor matter as to where that somewhere is.

Nancy........Right you are in welcoming Eugene/Gene Korolak to the Class's site.

Gene.........Curiosity here.  Do you still go by Gene or do you prefer Eugene?  Hope you take the time to drop a note to the forum.

Hint of the day.......Get yourself plasticized before your 60th birthday.

Earthquake in Kalgoorlie this morning.  From the report on the West's website there appears to have been quite a bit of damage.

 ******************************************************************************

The magnitude 5.0 earthquake that rocked the Goldfields this morning was the biggest one to hit the area since records began in 1900, according to Geosciences Australia.

Seismologist David Jepsen said the quake was large by Australian standards and would have caused extensive, widespread damage in the area.

The tremors were felt several kilometres away from the epicentre, which was 10km south-west of Kalgoorlie.

"It is a large earthquake for Australia and events of this size occur once every year on average. It's been several years since we have had something like this in Australia,' Mr Jepsen said.

The seismologist explained how the earthquake was caused by the shifting tectonic plates beneath Australia.

"Australia is moving north-east up towards the Eur-Asia and Pacific plates. Also we have got the load of the continent itself. Due to gravity these two forces, once they exceed greater than the strength of the rock in the area, you can get ruptures. This is why we can't pinpoint exactly where it's going to happen," he said.

Mr Jepsen said there was a high possibility of aftershocks, although they would not be as strong as the first quake, perhaps around magnitude three.

He added that the evacuation of the Superpit was a necessary safety precaution.

"You don't know what's happened underground in the mine," he said.

Mr Jepsen said, given the strength of the earthquake, it was lucky there had been no reports of serious injuries so far.

"It's great that if you have balconies and roofs collapsing no-one has been injured. It's lucky with the time it occurred," he said.

He said many people would have been affected by paintings and pictures falling off walls, loose objects being broken and cracks in walls within 10km of the epicentre.amage.

Susan...........I checked in at thewest.au.com to get an update.  Seems that this quake was strong enough to shake one's dentures off the sight stand and rattle one's nerves.  They said that this was the strongest one since 1968 in Australia.

For those who don't know, Kalgoorlie is the heart of the gold mining industry in Austalia.  If you go to Google, click on maps, put in Kalgoorlie, hit sattelite....you can get an idea how big the Super Pit mine is.  Kalgoorlie is about 730km/455mi from Susan's home.

If you did all that, you now know more than most US citizens.  Once again the Class of 68' leads the way.

Debra.......I'm glad that you found drweil.com useful.  I've found it a great source of information.

Everyone.........If you are interested in your health or just learning about any number of health issues from A-Z.  I have found the Dr. Weil site to be one of my favorites.  He has a question of the day from readers.  He answers with an explanation of the condition and gives his dietary recommendations.  If you are curious about Alzheimers,  Arthritis,  Krohn's, Meniere's, Hepatitis, Diabetes and more.  It is a good starting point to learn more.  No cost, no sales, just information about health, diet, treatments and alternatives.  I first learned about him on a PBS special.

So far I haven't seen him recommend plasticizing one's self at age 60, but you never know.

04/20/10 11:43 PM #295

Dorothy Rodes

John, the only age that bothered me before 59 was 35. Seemed like I had some expectations of myself I hadn't shared with myself and hadn't met either.

Googled plasticizing. Looked scary. Guess I'll stick with normal. Normal is someone you don't know very well.

Susan, did you feel the quake?

Random out.

A bit too far away, Dorothy.  Pleanty of reports in yesterday's paper of things flying off shelves and ceilings collapsing.  I'm glad to have missed that one!  Unfortunately rain has been forecast for that part of the state.

Sounds like your next gig is going to be a good one!  Wish I could be there.

04/22/10 07:18 AM #297

John MacLeod

Dorothy...........Instead of plasticizing perhaps I should have said shrink wrapped.  And no, that is doesen't mean having a psychologist help one put their coat on.  I'll slap myself now for that bad pun.

Unfortunately  the wife unit and I are unable to make it to Egan's tomorrow night.  For those who are looking for a nice easy night out it really it is a good one.  The food is good, the prices are reasonable and your significant other will be suprised at an evening out with dinner and entertainment.  Of course Dorothy and her  musicians are great.  Ballard is still on the map and they don't check to see if your Swedish when you cross 15th, but saying "Ya, sure and pass the lutefisk" won't hurt your standing in the community.

04/22/10 12:27 PM #298

Dorothy Rodes

John, my gig is Saturday 4/24. No worries. Perhaps another time and/or a different type of gathering.

Shrink wrapping? What's the goal here?

Sue, glad you missed the excitement.

Peace out.

Dorothy........I thought that plasticizing or shrink wrapping might help put the aging process on hold.  Perhaps reverse the effect that gravity has had on our bodies, reduce the wrinkle factor or help relieve some of the aches and pains.  Gravity has ceased to be our friend.  As one of our classmates told me some time ago......."No more rose buds, just hanging baskets".

04/25/10 09:38 AM #300

Dorothy Rodes

OK, John, now I'm with you. Gravity is grounding yet harsher on the body as time goes by. Other than invasive measures, seems the only counter (other than good genes perhaps) is exercise, something I've proven to myself over and over and still struggle mightily with when I lose momentum. In such a skirmish now. Here's an inspiring video: http://money.cnn.com/video/news/2010/04/12/n_cmr_92_year_old_yoga.cnnmoney/

Peace out

I've been wondering the same thing, Nancy.

All's well in Western Australia.  Nice downpour of rain Friday evening and most of Saturday.  Timely, too, as I had superphosphate spread on the paddocks on Friday afternoon.  Now just need the odd day of sunshine to get the grass to grow!

05/29/10 04:48 PM #303

Nancy Raetzloff (Groth)

Glad to see that Susan is around.  Where are the rest of you?  We are in San Diego this week and enjoyed the zoo yesterday.  Not too much rain and not too much sun.  Just hanging this afternoon after a hike along Santa Margarita creek.  We had fun dodging the road apples (horse droppings) and I managed to not twist my ankles too  bad.  What ever happening to that young body I once had?  If you are reading this, send an email to John MacLeod and see if you can't get him to come back and liven this place up a bit.

Nancy......Road apples reminds me of a story from the class of '64 or 65.  It seems that a number of the students in Miss Jardine's class weren't all that happy with her.  So in a token of their appreciation, just prior to graduation, she was presented a candy box filled with road apples.  Needless to say there was quite a bit of scrambling done by the guilty parties, in order to attend graduation.

My older sister mentioned Miss Jardine's name at the dinner table one evening.  Mind you, Nan Jardine, was in her mid sixties.  My dad was shocked that she was still at Franklin.  It seems that he had her as a teacher when he was there in the early 30's.  However she was a babe at that time and all the guys were drooling over here.

Apologies for dropping the ball here............John

Man, oh man, oh manchevitz it sounds like we are in for a doozy of a rain storm here in western WA.  While Nancy is out frying eggs on the sidewalk in the Phoenix heat we will get 2-4 inches of rain, according to predictions.  If it was fall we would have spawning salmon running up the highway.  Boy am I glad I got the lawn mowed yesterday.

Well, two deer just mozied through the yard and down the driveway.  Some days I feel like Marlin Perkins from Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom".

Hey, be sure to read Mel Smith's updated profile.  It is a good, interesting read.
